Guidelines to ensure that donating does not become dumping

Guidelines to ensure that donating does not become dumping

  • Make sure that equipment you would like to donate is complete and in full working condition. Few organizations are equipped to handle products in need of even minimal repairs.
  • Check with the receiving organization to ensure that they can accept and use your specific piece of equipment. Some organizations have restrictions on the age or capabilities of equipment they will accept.
  • If possible try to include the accessories (power cords, keyboard, mouse, etc) and keep the operating system software, original disks and user manual with the equipment whenever possible.
  • Ensure that the receiving organization agrees to recycle the equipment responsibly when it is “retired” or offer to take back the equipment to ensure proper disposal.
  • Remove all personal information using a disk-cleaning utility that will make the information unrecoverable.
