CEH Statement on New Bill to Make Companies Come Clean About Toxic PFAS

“CEH applauds Reps. Delgado, Kildee, Gallagher, and Fitzpatrick for introducing landmark legislation today, H.R. 2577, that addresses our nation’s dangerous lack of information about where toxic PFAS chemicals are released into our environment,” said Ansje Miller, CEH’s Director of Policy and Partnerships. “PFAS chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, and other serious health issues and are in everything from food packaging to dental floss to the water supply for millions of Americans to the blood of more than 98% of the U.S. public. Exposure to PFAS represents a public health crisis for present and future generations. In light of the magnitude of the public health crisis posed by our increasing exposure to this hazardous class of ubiquitous toxic chemicals, Trump’s EPA’s action plan was woefully inadequate and lacked the necessary urgency. It is imperative that the public know when these toxic substances are released into the environment, especially communities that live near facilities that have released significant PFAS pollution in the past – like chemical manufacturing facilities, airports, and military bases. By making this entire class of these highly persistent chemicals public – as this legislation would do – we can get information about where and how companies like DuPont, Chemours, and 3M are knowingly poisoning us and use this information to protect our families and communities.”
