It is astounding that the Consumer Product Safety Commission's leadership continues to insist that they need to do more research before adopting a rule to protect American children ("Agency Misses Chance to Curb Lead in Jewelry," Personal Journal, Feb. 12). Our organization brought legal action to stop the threat of lead-tainted jewelry in 2003, and following two years of negotiations, in January 2006 the jewelry industry agreed on strict limits on lead in metal, vinyl and other materials used in childrens' and adults' jewelry. Our settlement formed the basis for the California law on lead in jewelry that went into effect last September. The agency's stalling continues to put our children at risk from a totally unnecessary lead poisoning threat.
