Fracking and Health: State of the Science
This week, ProPublica reported on a number of recent studies showing the health impacts on communities near fracking developments. The investigators there looked at fracking health studies back in 2011, and now noted that some new information is showing increasing cause for concern, as well as areas where research is still lacking.
CEH’s recent report, “Toxic and Dirty Secrets: The Truth About Fracking and Your Family’s Health” uncovers some of this recent science and exposes some of the gaps in current knowledge about fracking safety. Despite these warnings, the fracking industry continues its rush to develop new fracking sites across the country. The oil and gas industry is the only industry in the U.S. that is allowed to “inject hazardous materials-unchecked” directly into or adjacent to underground drinking water supplies. Despite the risks, fracking has been largely exempted from federal environmental laws.
